Bikepacking Packing List: The Ideal Equipment for Your Bike Trip

Biking is like doping for the soul - every cyclist who has already experienced a successful bikepacking tour can confirm this. If you're a beginner looking to escape the daily grind and explore the world on two wheels, you've come to the right place. Because before you hop on the saddle, there's one thing you shouldn't forget: a well-thought-out packing list.

With the right equipment, your bike trip will be unforgettable - and above all, stress-free. Here you'll find out what belongs in your bags!

Bikepacking Packing List for 3-5 Days

First, plan your route in detail. The duration of your tour, the weather conditions, and whether you'll be staying in accommodations or in a tent are important considerations that will influence your packing list. The following packing list is aimed at bikepackers who want to be on the road for 3 to 5 days with a tent in mild temperatures.

For 1 to 2 weeks or longer, the basic equipment remains the same, however, you should plan stops to replenish provisions or wash clothes. If you're preparing for a longer journey, it might be sensible to supplement your equipment with a few flexible options (e.g., more snacks or an additional base layer for clothing).

1. The Right Setup

Before we start packing, a quick check: Do you have the right bicycle bags? While classic bicycle bags are attached to the luggage carrier, bikepacking bags are often located in or on the frame - this reduces air resistance while riding. The most important bikepacking bags are:

Frame bag:

Perfect for heavy and compact items like tools or food.

Handlebar bags:

For sleeping bag, tent, or clothing.

Saddlebag:

Ideal for lighter items like clothing or hygiene products.

Important: Distribute the weight evenly on your bike and pack the items you need frequently in an easily accessible place. Check the weather report before your trip, as waterproof packs are advisable in case of heavy rain to protect essential items from moisture.

2. Sleep Under the Stars

For a restful night in nature, you should pack these items:

  • Tent, tarp, or bivy sack - depending on preference and weather conditions
  • Sleeping bag - pay attention to size and temperature range.
  • Insulating mat - light, compact, and comfortable.

Pro-Tip:

If you want to go minimalist, often a tarp with a light insulating mat is enough - this saves space and weight.

3. Clothing - Less is More

When bikepacking, every gram counts. Therefore, especially functional, light, and versatile Clothing for your packing list:

  • 2–3 Shirts (preferably breathable)
  • 1 Rain jacket (waterproof and windproof)
  • 1 pair of long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt for cool evenings
  • Underwear and socks (preferably made of Merino)
  • Comfortable shoes that also work off-bike

4. Food & Drink

On long journeys, you need energy. Plan your food supply well and pack:

  • Snacks: Granola bars, nuts, dried fruits
  • Freeze-dried meals or easily cooked food (e.g., couscous or pasta)
  • Stove + fuel, if you want to eat warm meals
  • Water bottles (at least 2 l capacity)
  • Water filter or tablets, if you are traveling away from supermarkets

Pro Tip:

Pack a small luxury snack, like chocolate or cookies – it lifts the spirits after a long day.

5. Tools & Spare Parts

Breakdowns are part of the adventure, and with these equipment items, you are prepared for any situation:

  • Multitool
  • Spare tube and patch kit
  • Tire levers
  • Mini pump
  • Chain lock
  • Small bottle of chain oil

If you are traveling far off the beaten path, a spare derailleur hanger or a few zip ties in your luggage could save the day.

6. Hygiene & First Aid

You want to feel comfortable on the go and be able to take care of minor injuries:

  • Small travel first aid kit (band-aids, pain relievers, antiseptic, antihistamine)
  • Biodegradable soap
  • Microfiber towel (lightweight and quick-drying)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste (small travel size)
  • Sunscreen and lip balm with UV protection

7. Electronics & Miscellaneous

  • Technology and small helpers can make your life easier during the bike tour:
  • Power bank and charging cables
  • Bicycle lights (front and rear)
  • GPS device or smartphone with offline maps (can be mounted on the handlebar)
  • Headlamp, for finding your way in the dark
  • Camera, if you want to capture moments
  • Earplugs (for a peaceful sleep, even when it's windy)

Last Check: Are you ready?

Before you set off, take a short trip with your loaded bike. This way, you'll notice if the weight is well distributed and if everything is securely attached. And remember:

The most important thing in Bikepacking is your spirit of adventure! Enjoy the freedom, discover new paths, and don't stress – it's about the journey, not the destination. Have fun packing and above all: Safe travels!
