Washing school backpacks: an overview of methods

How to Properly Wash a School Bag: Keep It Clean and in Top Condition!

A school bag accompanies your child daily: It's not only a practical item, but also a faithful companion in everyday school life. So it's inevitable that dirt, crumbs and stains accumulate over time. A clean school bag or rucksack is not only more hygienic, but also lasts longer and looks better. The holidays or a long weekend provide the perfect opportunity for you to wash your child's school bag. But what's the best way to go about it? Whether by hand washing, in the dishwasher or perhaps even in the washing machine – we'll show you which method is suitable when and what you should pay attention to when cleaning and caring for it, so that the school bag looks like new again without being damaged.

Preparation Before Washing

Regardless of whether before hand cleaning or washing in the dishwasher or washing machine: Before you begin cleaning the school bag, thorough preparation is crucial.

You should tackle the following three steps:

Empty the school bag:

Remove all books, exercise books and pencil cases and also check small side compartments and pockets for additional school accessories.

Check materials and manufacturer's care instructions:

You can often find these on a small label inside the school bag and discover whether the bag is machine washable or hand washing is recommended.

Remove coarse dirt:

To remove dust, sand or crumbs, you can shake out the bag, brush it off and if necessary clean hard-to-reach places with a narrow vacuum cleaner attachment.

Hand Washing: The Gentle Method

Hand washing is a safe and gentle cleaning method. If your child's school bag is made from delicate materials or has appliqués and reflective elements, hand washing is the best choice. Gentle hand cleaning prevents the bag from losing its shape or special details.

Step-by-Step Guide for Hand Washing

And this is how hand cleaning succeeds:

  1. Prepare cleaning area: Place the bag in a bath, shower, washbasin or large bucket and rinse the bag with warm water.

  2. Use gentle cleaning agents: Apply a little mild washing liquid or washing-up liquid to a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid aggressive cleaners, bleach or alcohol, as these could damage the bag's material.

  3. Clean gently: Wipe the bag with the cloth or sponge from inside and outside. For particularly dirty areas, a sponge with a scouring surface is ideal for light scrubbing.

  4. Rinse: Finally, rinse the school bag thoroughly with clear, cold water to remove all soap residues.

  5. Dry properly: Hang the bag upside down in a warm place and open all compartments so that the school bag can dry completely.

  6. Final waterproofing: Once the school bag is completely dry, you can treat it with a waterproofing agent or spray (against rain).

Besides the bag, you can naturally also clean smaller school accessories, such as pencil cases, by hand. A damp cloth and a little washing-up liquid as cleaning agent is sufficient for this.

Washing School Bags in the Dishwasher

Washing the school bag or school satchel in the dishwasher – is that even possible? What initially sounds unusual works wonderfully with certain school bags. With this method, the school bag is cleaned thoroughly and less laboriously compared to hand cleaning. However, not all bags are suitable for the dishwasher.

Besides the bag, you can naturally also clean smaller school accessories, such as pencil cases, by hand. A damp cloth and a little washing-up liquid as cleaning agent is sufficient for this.

Before the wash cycle, you should therefore check whether the following conditions are met:

  • The bag has a solid frame .
  • The bags are not made of felt or leather, but of plastic.
  • There are no cardboard parts present.
  • Your dishwasher has a short or cold wash programme selectable with a maximum of 55 degrees Celsius.

Not every school bag or rucksack is suitable for the dishwasher! Therefore always check the manufacturer's care instructions and if in doubt, opt for an alternative cleaning method, such as gentle hand washing.

Step-by-Step Guide for Cleaning in the Dishwasher

If your child's bag meets all requirements, you should approach washing in the dishwasher as follows:

  1. Prepare dishwasher: Remove all crockery and ensure that no food residues remain in the machine that could soil the school bag. Also remove unnecessary accessories, such as the cutlery basket, from the machine.

  2. Position bag correctly: Now place the open school bag upside down in the bottom rack of the dishwasher.

  3. Select cleaning programme: Choose a short or cold wash programme that has a maximum of 55 degrees Celsius – preferably less.

And here's the tip too: After the wash cycle, you can let the school bag dry thoroughly just as after hand washing and waterproof it for care after complete drying.

Washing School Bags in the Washing Machine

If you want to wash the bag in the washing machine, great caution is required. Some manufacturers also generally advise against washing their models in the washing machine. This is because protective coatings can be damaged there and furthermore the material is subjected to strong friction. For this reason, you should primarily research the manufacturers' specifications before the wash cycle.

Washing in the washing machine is – if at all – only conceivable under these conditions:

  • The frame of the school bag is flexible and not form-stable.
  • The bag is not made of leather, but of washable materials, e.g. cotton.
  • Recommended for this type of cleaning is a gentle wash cycle at 20–30 degrees Celsius.

Please note that with some manufacturers the warranty for the school bag or rucksack expires after washing in the dishwasher or washing machine.

Conclusion: How can you clean a school bag?

To make your child's school bag shine again in bright colours and fresh condition, you have the following options:

  • Hand washing: This is the gentlest method and always the first and safest choice for delicate materials.
  • Dishwasher: Cleaning in the dishwasher can be an effective alternative for robust plastic models, but only at low temperatures.
  • Washing machine: This cleaning method is only suitable for durable bags made of washable material and without delicate details and solid frame. Here applies: Pay attention to manufacturer instructions and always use a gentle programme!
